The Sammy G, we called her.

Here, I grew up. I learned to weld (not very well), work on typewriters (omg, remember the Selectric!?!), perform Damage Control maintenance (a deck drain will gross you out, trust me!), fire a weapon (accurately) and stand watch.

On this floating bucket of bolts, I visited exotic places:

Hawaii
Sasebo, Japan
Subic Bay, Philippinnes
Hong Kong
Singapore
The Sechelles
Diego Garcia

Oh, and I met my husband.

It was hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. We had fun running down ladders and through the mess decks while performing fire drills. Or, we sat for hours in gas masks during November Emergency drills (that's when you pretend you just got nuked). I performed colors in the mornings when I had early watch, and trust me, that's a big ass flag we fly!

And I was initiated.

Okay.

The first time you cross the equator, there is an initiation ceremony called Wog Day. If you are a Wog (ie, first time crossing), you have to wear your clothes inside out and backwards, crawl around the entire ship on your knees from about 4am to noon. You're "paddled" by Shellbacks (those who have already crossed) with shillelaghs (made out of fire hose), and woe to your ass if you'd recently pissed off someone. You crawl through garbage, have eggs broken on your head, stick your head in a toilet full of garbage...then, finally, you are "baptized" (tossed into a tank filled with sea water and shark repellent). Did I mention how much fun this was? I didn't? Well, it might have been, if I'd been allowed to sleep the night before. That's also a part of it. Not letting the Wogs sleep. No mercy. Oh, and I left out some of the grosser stuff. lol

I have often said that joining the Navy was the best thing I'd ever done in my life. And you know what?

It was.

For my fellow sailors keeping a weather eye on the horizon, and all vets, past and present, I salute you. Thank you for allowing me to have been one of you.

Okay, so Gossip Girl, which I don't watch, has an episode coming up where three of the characters engage in a menage a troi. A parents group, Parents Television Council, is asking for the episode to be pre-empted or pulled, cause Susie and Jimmy's eyes might fall out.

Note to Stoopid Parents: The BEST way to ensure that your kids will do something that you don't want them to do is to POINT IT OUT IN A LOUD AND PUBLIC MANNER. Jesus, the ratings for that episode are gonna be off the hook!!!

So, I was working on my Fall Challenge fic when screaming and cursing wafted up the stairs.

It was the husband, yelling at the tv. He does that.

He was accusing the umpires of being blind when it came to calling balls and strikes.

You see, the Yankees were playing.

So, I changed the channel. That was a mistake. I got to witness the Angels get their asses handed to them by the damned Yankees, resulting in the Yankees winning the pennant and going to the World Series.

GO, PHILLIES!!!!

Yes, I do hate the Yankees, why do you ask?

So, following that, I start flipping channels, just killing time before Brothers & Sisters comes on. What do I find?

The Matrix Reloaded.

Yes, I've seen this 5000 times, including once in the theatre. But there's a reason for that. Two reasons, actually.

One is the Zion scene, when the dancing starts. I love that scene, and the song (by Fluke). The tribal drums, the sexual energy of it. I just wish they'd quit cutting away to Neo and Trinity, who were boring.

So, I spent the morning flipping through the blogosphere, watching people's heads asplode, or reading back-handed congratualtions to President Obama for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

A prize, I might add, that he certainly didn't lobby for, and, judging by his reaction, had no idea was going to be awarded to him.

Want a well thought out reason why he was awarded this?

Does he deserve this? Quite frankly, I'm not on the consideration committee, so I can't anwser that. I don't know what the specific criteria is for deciding, nor do I know who the other contenders were. So I'll leave that to others more learned than me.

And, even though he was speaking about health care reform, this comment by Rep Alan Grayson pretty much sums up my thoughts about the things I've read today.

Regarding the American people, Rep Grayson said this:

"They understand that if Barack Obama were somehow able to cure hunger in the world the Republicans would blame him for overpopulation"

"They understand that if Barack Obama could somehow bring about world peace they would blame him for destroying the defense industry."

"In fact, they understand that if Barack Obama has a BLT sandwhich tommorrow for lunch, they will try to ban bacon."

This past week was absolutely crazy.

As you guys know (and I've whined constantly about), I had an inspection last week that took almost two months to prepare for. It was insane and stressful, and some days I just wanted to crawl under the covers and never come out.

But then, I came across this...fic.

It could be considered crack...okay, fine, it's crack like I've never seen.

And it had me laughing hysterically this week, a much needed diversion.

This just makes me fall in love all over again.
